supermarcat

the goal is to give the user full control of what their pet eats all while being on your mobile phone. conveniently delivered to your doorstep, supermarcat is a pet food app that lets users customize their cat's diet.

RESEARCH

I completed an in-depth case study surrounding this app from ideation to completion, starting with paper wireframes and market/user research. the app needed to be easy to use and understand, as convenience was uncovered as a strong need in the personas below. the app had a recognizable but clean layout to make the user more comfortable navigating the interface. during the research phase, it was shown that pet owners face several challenges determining the best diet to feed their pets with price, ingredients, and quality being important deciding factors (1). It is estimated that just 1% of all cats have food related allergies (3). with up to 61.9 million pet cats in the united states, that would be at least over 600k pet cats stateside who could benefit from supermarcat (4) based on food allergies alone.

it was shown that the typical consumer went the traditional route of feeding commercial pet food to their pets, but there's a growing segment of people feeding their pets human grade quality food (either homemade or bought). this was due to the growing perception that commercial pet foods may not be as wholesome, nutritious, and safe as other available options. there is an increasing number of people that got their pet information (or misinformation) from online sources (internet/social media) that feed into this segment of consumers (1). this does not take into account that there are also consumers who have pets with food allergies. allergy attacks are not only terrible for you and your cat, but cats that have chronic or serious medical issues, such as environmental or food allergies... will incur many more medical expenses than a cat that remains healthy (5).

supermarcat is perfect for the conscientious consumer who is not only concerned about the wellbeing of their cat, but also for those owners who have pets with allergies. with the ability to choose exactly what goes into your cat's food, you can significantly avoid food based allergic reactions and could give your cat their best life. supermarcat's objective is to focus on the individual ingredients and the quality of the food to provide the highest quality cat food for a reasonable price.

being able to fully flesh out each step of the process was crucial to make adjustments and refine the design during each step of the project. starting the process with paper wireframes made rapid iterating easier before moving to a digital format (seen below). the process practiced different information architecture before choosing an option based on usability testing during the next step of the project.

CONCLUSION

working on this project as a devoted pet parent felt like a huge opportunity to do something different. I was able to not only incorporate user feedback in each step of the design process, but i was able to recollect my own needs and, more importantly, frustrations about purchasing pet food and try to use that as a secondary source of inspiration. it really drove home the point that having empathy for the user and understanding their motivations and pain points is fundamental for effective product design. moving forward, spending months working on this design was definitely an enjoyable experience i would love to be able to revisit in the future.
